The JAG Story
In 1973, within the Conservatory of Music at Capital University, music professor, Ray Eubanks had an idea to create a publicly funded Jazz Orchestra, similar to Symphony Orchestras around the Country at the time. With the help of a small grant from Capital University, The Jazz Arts Group gave its first public performance on Campus in April 1974, featuring guest artist, Ladd Macintosh. The second concert featured International trumpet player, Clark Terry.
As Ray said, “the ground began to rumble, like an earthquake.”
For over thirty years as Artistic Director, Ray and The Jazz Arts Group hosted some of the best known Jazz artists to packed audiences: Clark Terry, Phil Woods, Tom Scott, Sweets Edison, The Brecker Brothers, Maynard FergusonmSir Roland Hanna, Bill Watrous,
Gary Burton, Joe Williams, Louis Belson, Doc Severenson, Bill Holman -
a who's who of American Jazz!
However, without the audience, The Jazz Arts Group would have been little more than a rehearsal band. The long time season tickets holders who attended year after year came not only hear the exciting Big Band sound, but because the concerts were so entertaining.
"One didn’t have to be a Jazz fan to enjoy a Jazz Arts Group concert."
Margaret Barr, Orchestra Manager
